Read on as Kristy demonstrates how to add a special touch to your gift wrap this wedding season!

Whether you are putting on a wedding or attending one, you know that presentation is EVERYTHING. I’ve seen people try to outdo one another at the gift table for that reason – the bigger the better! But that’s not always true. Why not put a smidge more thought into your gift packaging and coordinate the colors? Brides can do it for gifts to their bridal party or guests can do it for the happy couple. Since Copic has 358 colors, the chances are really good that you’ll find that matching hue. I’m going to show you one way you can coordinate your gift box:

To complete this project you will need:

- Copic ABS
- Copic Various Ink refill and Sketch marker of the same color (I’m using BG11)
- White glitter
- Paper doily
- Box with resist printing (you can see how I made the box at my blog www.theoddgirl.com)
- Colorless Blender Various Ink refill and marker
- Stamps appropriate for the occassion (To/From and sentiment)
- Acrylic block
- Sheer white ribbon
- Wet adhesive
- Paper towel
- Sandwich baggie

One of the great things about Copic markers and the refills is that the Various Ink will adhere to any nonporous surface. We are going to use that to our advantage by color coordinating everything we need.

The first thing we are doing is to take our glitter, BG11 Various Ink and our baggie for some prep, as this needs to dry. Pour some of the BG11 Various Ink into the baggie and add in a small amount of glitter. Knead the glitter and ink together to get a nice coating on the glitter. Once this is done, pour it onto a piece of paper towel and allow to dry. Next take the baggie, place the ribbon inside and repeat. I didn’t say we could color anything

Next we are going to take our Copic ABS and BG11 Sketch Marker and spray our box, giving it a liberal coating. An even coat is not necessary, though you don’t want it blotchy. Remember that our box was made with a paper that has a resist pattern (make your own pattern with clear embossing!). After your box has been colored, the magic happens! Pour a little of your Colorless Blender Various Ink onto some paper towel and wipe off the ink that was sprayed onto the resist pattern. This is going to give the box a fun pattern, move that color off the resist and onto the paper, and give it a soft look too. If your color isn’t dark enough, you can go back and repeat these steps as many times as you need. Let it dry between to prevent the paper from warping.

We are going to use our paper doily to put our sentiment and our “To/From” on. Instead of stamp ink we are going to use our BG11 and 0 Sketch markers to ink up our stamps. First place your stamp on the block and color over the stamp with BG11. The clear stamps are great for this as you can easily see the color being added, especially lighter colors (make sure your stamps are clean of old ink before hand). Once you get a good coat, take your Colorless Blender and give a coat to the area on the doily where you want to stamp. Soaking the doily in Colorless Blender “reactivates” the ink, allowing it to transfer. Now we have the perfect ink color too!

Every wedding needs a little glitter, so next we are taking our wet adhesive and the now dry glitter we prepared earlier to add a little extra touch to our doily. Trace a circle around the inner edge and press it into the glitter. Pressing rather than sprinkling gets the glitter in the adhesive more securely (and makes less of a mess ) Once the glue is dry, write your message and adhere the doily to the center of the top of our box and tie with our colored ribbon. Make sure you put your gift inside before tying it though!

Ta-Dah! Our gift is wrapped, gorgeous and coordinating! What more could a bride ask for?

Papercrafting designer Colleen Schaan is one of our Design and Education/Instruction team members, and this week she’s sharing a unique project that utilizes Copic Various Ink. Enjoy!

While I like to use my Copic markers to color images in the traditional way, I also like to experiment a bit and see what other fun ways I can use them. I’m really excited to share one of my favorite “non-traditional” Copic coloring methods with you today.

As a mixed media artist, I’m always trying to… well… mix my media! I did just that, combining Copic Various Inks and acrylic gel medium to create funky, colored skins which I then used to “color” an image.

You will need:
Non-stick craft sheet
Various ink (2 of each color)
Palette knife
Gel medium (glossy was used here)
Canvas board
White acrylic paint
Paintbrush (flat)
Copic marker(s) (not black)
Scissors or Xacto knife

First, you need to make your acrylic skins. Typically, thin layers of acrylic paint are used for this. I wanted a very vibrant yet transparent mix of colors, so I used Copic Various Inks to create the color for each skin. It’s imperative to use a non-stick craft sheet when making your skins.

Apply 3-6 drops of Various Inks onto the surface of the craft sheet. This can be all one shade or a mixture of 2 different shades or colors. Here I am using YR15 and YR18.

Using a thin palette knife, slowly spread the ink across the surface of the craft sheet. Initially, the ink will condense and reform beads. As it dries, it will stick to the surface and remain spread out. Blowing lightly on the ink as you spread it helps to speed up this process.

Once the ink is completely dry (no longer sticky), apply a layer of gel medium over the ink with a palette knife. Spread the gel medium gently and try not to “mix” the ink into the medium. The medium should be approximately 1/8 – 1/4 “ thick. I like to leave stoke marks in the medium for added texture.

Repeat the previous three steps with the additional colors necessary to “color” your image.

While the skins are drying (typically overnight), draw an image onto the canvas board (try this technique first with simple, open images and move onto more complex and detailed images as your experience with skins progresses). Outline your image with a dark Copic marker (do not use black as the pigment in black sometimes feathers when combined with acrylic mediums). Apply a thin layer of white acrylic paint over the drawn image. This gives a nice bright base for your skins and the Copic ink of the drawing will become visible once the paint dries.

.
Once the skins and the drawing are dry, you can move on to the next step in “coloring” your image (if your skins have “cracked” during the drying process, the layer of gel medium was too thin. You can apply another thin layer over the cracks and let dry before proceeding). Carefully remove each skin from the craft sheet by sliding a large palette knife under the edge and gently lifting. The Copic ink will be pulled from the craft sheet and “stick” to the bottom of the skins. Do not let the skins fold or touch each other as they will stick together.

Place a colored skin over the area of the image that you want “colored” and trace around the outlines of the image.

Using an Xacto knife or scissors, cut along the lines of the image.

Once you have all of the pieces cut, the “coloring” begins! Apply a thin layer of gel medium to a section of the drawing and then place the corresponding skin over it. Press down gently to adhere. Continue gluing skins into place. Layer individual colors to create more depth and texture.

.
Once the colored image is dry, outline the image and add final details with a dark Copic marker.

While this obviously takes much more time and effort than traditional coloring, it also gives a completely different look. The mix of texture, translucency and depth create an almost stained-glass effect – perfect for an array of mixed media projects.

In this week’s guest tutorial, mixed media artist Bianca Mandity shares some tips for creating marbleized paper with Copic Various Ink. Enjoy!

When I was in school I learned how to marbleize paper traditionally using a chemical bath. I loved the look of the papers, but was concerned about the chemicals needed to produce the marbleizing effect. Ever since, I’ve been searching for a way to marbleize without the chemicals. I tried doing the shaving cream process, but found it expensive since you can’t reuse the shaving cream and the results didn’t really look like the real thing. One day when cleaning up my craft mat, I noticed my Copic ink was floating in some hand sanitizer that I’d spilled while cleaning my hands. A light bulb went on over my head. This process creates beautiful results without the chemicals of traditional marbleizing or the expense of using shaving cream.

For this tutorial you will need: Copic Various Ink, antibacterial hand santizer, palate knife, non-stick craft sheet, comb and X-Press It blending card or marker paper.

Step One: On your non-stick surface place a large amount of hand santizer and spread out with the palate knife. Don’t spread it too thin, as this will mess up the surface tension when it comes time to marbleize. You want it be no thinner than the thickness of heavy card stock.

Step Two: Drop a single drop of each of your colors onto your hand sanitizer.

Step Three: Take your comb and drag it through the ink and the hand sanitizer. You want to make sure and mix it well or it will transfer as one giant blob of color.

Step Four: Gently lay your paper down onto the gel. Let it set for a minute, don’t push or move it, just let it set. You’ll start to see the patterns showing up. If there are any spots where the colors don’t show up, gently press it down into the mixture.

Step Five: Grab your paper by the corners and lift straight off. Flip over and take a look at your beautiful marbleized paper.

Hint: If you have extra sanitizer setting on the top, you can hit the bottom with a heat gun to help set the colors and then lay a paper towel on top to soak up the extra sanitizer. Be careful not to drag or rub it. Just let it set and soak for a while and then lift off. You can also leave the extra sanitizer. It will eventually dry and might crackle slightly, but won’t destroy the marbleizing.

You can reuse your sanitizer by scraping it together the the palate knife and adding more color. But eventually it will turn brown and no longer marbleize cleanly. How long this takes depends on how much ink you use each time. When the sanitizer becomes dirty, simply wipe up with a paper towel and begin again.

I was working on this poster yesterday for our stores and I thought I’d share it here. Surprisingly, many people don’t realize that all of our markers are refillable. This means you can save a ton of money on markers in the long run. If you are using any of our marker types (Copic, Sketch, Ciao, Wide) then the below chart will show you how many refills you can get from one bottle of Various Ink. They are available in all 334 colors. If you are using Ciao, Copic or Wide (which don’t come in all colors) you can buy the empty markers and fill them with any color you like.

Getting a refillable marker that is high quality and has as many color options is tough. If you are switching over to Copic’s, hopefully you already know about the refill-ability of our products. Don’t forget our Mulitliner SP Ink Pens are refillable too. Make sure you recycle your old pens when they dry out. If you are looking for something interesting to do with them, I came across this article on diylife.com on “15 Uses for Old Pens“. Also check out the Pen Guy. He is trying to collect 1 million empty pens. He is putting together pen recycle stations and distributing them in the California area. I’d be interested to see more of these around. According to this article, Bic sold it’s 100 billionth ball point pen in 2005. If you laid that many pens end to end it would circle the earth 348 times. That’s nuts.

Refilling

How to know when it’s time to refill.

Test both ends of the marker. The biggest hint that it’s time to refill is when using the chisel end you see streaks. On the brush end you’ll need to refill when the ink has a harder time reaching the tip of the brush. If one end is dry but the other is juicy you may think your marker is fine, but it’s not. It still needs to be refilled.

Over time, if you find it difficult to evenly soak your paper or blend with some colors then you probably need to refill. You’ll have to refill your favorite colors sooner than you think.

Some things to consider before you refill:

Work over a protected surface. A thick paper plate, pie tin, or a stack of old newspapers make a great barrier for spills.

Make sure your refill color matches the marker. This is an easy mistake to make.

Have everything ready before you start, including your clean-up supplies. Keep a bottle of rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) or hand-sanitizer and some paper towels for clean up.

The Refill cap unscrews. Don’t try to pull it straight off like a marker lid, and whatever you do, don’t squeeze the bottle while unscrewing it. You’re bound to make a mess. Unscrew it over your protected surface.
5.. Refill from the chisel end of the marker.

Give yourself plenty of time to refill. Accidents happen when you get distracted or in a rush.

Amount of Ink to add

Each little mark on the side of a bottle of ink is 1 cc. These numbers will slightly underfill your marker, but it’s better to underfill than overfill.

Ciao- add 1 to 1.5 cc’s

Sketch- 2 cc’s

Copic 2-3 cc’s

Wide 3-4 cc’s

Refilling Copic Markers

Download the pdf instructions here.

Sketch, Copic and Ciao - Drip and Dab

This is the most direct method of refilling. Using the dropper built into the various ink bottle simply drip/dab drops of ink onto the chisel nib of your marker. Touch the very tip of the ink bottle to the tip of the marker. To refill a marker it takes about 20-30 drops of ink. Let each drop get sucked in before you add the next drop.

Remove Nib and Fill

This method is much faster than Drip and Dab. With your tweezers pull the chisel tip out from your marker. Take the cap off the other side of the marker (this helps to avoid getting air bubbles and allows the ink to seep in better). Carefully pour in the ink. Don’t squeeze too quickly since it’s easy to mis-judge how much ink you’re adding. When you’re done, put the nib back in and put both caps back on. Let your marker sit for a moment so the ink evenly distributes within the marker.

Refilling with the Booster Needle

Refilling markers with the Copic Booster needle is the most accurate and quick. Attach the Booster over the built-in dropper on a bottle of various ink. Then insert this into your marker, squeeze gently until you’ve added the correct amount of ink.

Copic original Markers

If you look at the chisel end you will see a little gap between the nib and the plastic barrel. The booster needle fits down into that gap and easily fills the marker. As the needle enters the marker you will feel some slight resistance- this is where it is meeting the sponge reservoir inside. You don’t need to jam the needle all the way until it stops, just until you feel the slight resistance.

Sketch or Ciao Markers

You will need to remove the chisel nib to refill with the booster. Push it in until you feel some resistance, then look at the ink level so you can tell how much you need to add. Gently squeeze until you’ve added the correct amount for your marker type.
When pulling the needle out of the marker do so at an angle so the ink doesn’t dribble down the side of the needle. Also, be careful not to squeeze while you are removing the needle.

Cleaning out the booster needle

An easy way to clean the needle is to put it into a small cup and add a little rubbing alcohol to rinse it in. Another easy way to clean it is to take an empty various ink bottle, fill it with rubbing alcohol, and squirt it through the needle until the juice flows clear. Either way, be sure that the whole needle is clean inside and out, and the base is clean.

Using the booster with different colors
You don’t need a different needle for each marker color, but you do need to clean out the needle really well between different colors.

If I need to fill a pale blue marker and a dark blue marker, Do the light color first, then rather than clean out the needle you can get away with using it directly with the darker blue ink. However, when switching color families rinse out your booster well to make sure you will not contaminate your marker.

Refilling Wide Markers

Touch the dropper to the wide nib by resting it in the groove built into the barrel. Gently squeeze to add ink. If you want, you can pull out the wide nib and drip ink down into the gaping barrel instead.
